Atwoli Re-elected Vice President Of The World’s Largest Trade Union Federation (ITUC)
The Central Organisation of Trade Unions, COTU (K) Secretary General Francis Atwoli was this morning re-elected unopposed for the second time running as the Vice President of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), the World’s largest Trade Union Federation and global voice of the working people.
Atwoli was elected by more than 1700 delegates during the 3rd Congress of the ITUC currently taking place in Berlin, Germany and during which he was equally elected unopposed as a member of the ITUC General Council which is the supreme decisions making organ of ITUC.
The ITUC represents over 176 million workers through its 325 National Affiliated Trade union organisations including Kenya’s COTU (K) within 161 countries and territories and was formed on November 1st 2006 out of the merger of the then International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) and the World Confederation of Labour (WCL).
As an Organisation that represents workers globally, the ITUC’s primary mission is the promotion and defense of worker’s rights and interest, through International cooperation between trade unions, global campaigning and advocacy within the major global institutions.
The election of Atwoli indeed is a great honour not only to the Kenyan Workers but in the region and Africa as a whole and is a clear manifestation of the confidence the workers world over have in the leadership and ability of Mr. Atwoli to deliver on their agenda and equally due to Atwoli’s persistent and uncompromising defense of the working people in Kenya.
COTU (K) takes this early opportunity to congratulate Atwoli on his unanimous election by his trade union colleagues from all over the world and as an organisation we promise to give him every supported needed in order for him to deliver in his new assignment as the global Vice President of ITUC.
