The 2016 Kenya’s Celebration of World Youth Day Stadium on Friday 14th 2016. Kenya joined the World in marking the day with the National celebrations held in Nakuru at Afraha Stadium.

COTU-K for the first time was an integral partner in organization of the this year’s celebration, as a result the umbrella organiastion for trade unions in Kenya moblised over 50 youthful trade unionists from its 42 affiliates across the country who attended the event in Nakuru.

The theme for this year’s celebrations in Kenya was “Demographic Dividends for Kenyan Youth through Sustainable Development Goals,” and the slogan is “Nothing for us without us.”

The Chief Guest was the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs Madam Sicily Kariuki. When visiting the COTU-K exhibition stand and advised the young trade unionist present to create awareness among young workers about their rights even as they agitate for their rights.

The event kicked off with a procession from Nyayo Grounds located in the heart of Nakuru town, led by the National Youth Service band the procession made its way through key roads within the town before heading to Afraha Stadium the venue of the celebration.

Speaking at the Afraha Stadium in Nakuru on Friday during the  International ‪Youth Day National celebrations in Kenya, the CS assured youths of Government support to ensure they are empowered economically adding that the youths are the strongest investment of the nation.

She however called on youths and women to ensure they join various groups in order to benefit from government funding such as Youth Enterprise Fund, Uwezo Fund and Women Enterprise fund.

According to the CS most youths have talents but they fail to join groups so as to benefit from the funds which the Government has set aside for them.

“I would like to appeal to the youths to understand that the Government has set aside funds and you can only benefit if you join groups and apply for the funds “she said.

Her sentiments were echoed by Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria and his Town West Counterpart Samuel Arama who also appealed to the youths to take advantage of the various funds set aside for them by the Government.
