General Secretaries Meeting and Press Briefing at COTU-(K) Headquaters Solidarity Building

The COTU-K Secretary General Bro. Francis Atwoli led the General Secretaries from COTU-K affiliate unions and members of the COTU-K Executive Board in holding their inaugural meeting following the elections held in May. The meeting main Agenda included a review of the just the concluded Quinquennial Conference and Elections of COTU-K and developent of strategies on how to implement their new mandate following their election. The Secretary General briefed the general secretaries on the active participation of COTU-K delegation at the recently concluded 105th International Labour Conference (2016) that was held in Geneva Switzerland. He pointed out that COTU-K delegation was the biggest from Africa and it allowed them to meaningfully participate in the various working groups and committees where the bulk of the negotiations are held.

At the end of the meeting The COTU-K Secretary General addressed a Press Conference where in his combative, assertive and humorous demeanor he aptly and eloquently addressed a number of current issues; he reaffirmed the commitment of the workers umbrella body to jealously guard the twin social funds of NSSF and NHIF from external and government interference, vowing to fight off cartels planning to steal from the two finds through corrupt deals.

The COTU-K Secretary General also applauded the efforts by the President(Government) and the CORD Coalition (Opposition) to agree and embrace dialogue as an avenue to reform the Elections body (IEBC) and the elections processes. Bro. Atwoli warned that failure to reform the IEBC is most likely to lead another post elections skirmishes as it happened in 2007/2008.
