Joint Retreat Between NHIF & COTU (K) Executive Board Members & General Secretaries
The COTU (K) Executive Board Members & General Secretaries are currently on a joint retreat the top management of the National Hospital Insurance Fund Management (NHIF). This is a follow-up to three similar retreats; firstly, at the Mombasa Serena Hotel on 10th -11th September, 2014 and the two consecutive ones on 26th -28th August, 2015 and 2nd -4th February, 2016 held at the Great Rift Valley Lodge in Naivasha.
One of the issues that will future prominently in the deliberation is the proposal for provision of universal health care to the entire Kenyan population by NHIF. It has always been the workers position that NHIF should not be solely responsible of funding it because it will burden more the workers who are the contributors, baring in mind that the current harsh economic realities amid growing inflation. The COTU-K position as articulated by the Secretary General Bro. Atwoli is that it will be prudent for the National government bears the cost by setting aside a budgetary allocation towards the provision of universal healthcare by the NHIF, and in the absence of such measures, the NHIF should remain exclusively to the contributing members.
The retreat is being attended by the Chief Executive Officer of NHIF, Bro. Geoffrey Mwangi, the Chairman General of COTU (K) Bro. Rajabu Mwondi, MBS, the Treasurer General of COTU (K), Sis. Rebecca Nyathogora among others Top leaders of the two organsations.
