Press Statement: Message of Condolence, Late Mama Lucy Kibaki

It is with deep sorrow that the Central Organisation of Trade Unions, COTU (K) learned this morning of the death of our former First Lady Mama Lucy Kibaki.

On behalf of the entire Kenyan workforce, COTU (K) joins the rest of Kenyans in mourning the late First Lady whose contribution to the overall development of this country will forever inform our memories particularly through her personal initiatives in the fight against HIV& Aids both in Kenya and on the entire African Continent as well as the construction and equipping of the Mama Lucy Kibaki hospital situated right in the Eastlands part of Nairobi.

Despite her status in the society, the late Mama Lucy preferred to always associate herself with the disadvantaged and spoke passionately on several occasions about issues affecting the lowly placed and would even go further to castigate our elected leaders who remained uninterested with the common man’s problems and it is against this background that the entire Nation will miss this immense contribution that the late Mama Lucy stood for.

Particularly, her initiative that realized Mama Lucy Kibaki hospital, has seen thousands of poor Kenyans access health care at this facility and despite its location that conventionally those of her status would not have preferred to put up such a facility in such an area, this only attests to the passion that the Late Mama Lucy had for the poor.

Our deep condolences on behalf of the entire Kenyan workforce goes to our form President His Excellency Mwai Kibaki together with his children Judith, Jimmy, David and Anthony for this irreparable loss and pray that God gives them the courage to endure through this difficult moments.

May God rest her soul in Eternal Peace.
