COTU (K) PARTICIPATES IN THE 64 TH SESSIONS OF THE UNFCCC SUBSIDIARY BODIES CLIMATE MEETINGS
COTU (K) participated in the UNFCCC 64 th Sessions Subsidiary Bodies Climate Meetings
(SB64) in Bonn, Germany from 8 th to 18 th June 2026 under the FES-TUCC and ITUC delegation
in the Trade Union Non-Governmental Organizations (TUNGO) observer constituency of the
UNFCCC, representing the voices and interests of Kenyan workers in the global climate process.
Workers from different sectors in Kenya’s labour space continue to experience the effects of
climate change and transition as a result of climate action. Some of the effects faced by the
workers include job/income loss, damage to workplaces, skill mismatch, occupational safety and
health risks such as exposure to heat stress, reduced productivity, and psychosocial/mental
health effects among others.
During the SB64 discussions, the urgency in implementing the operationalisation of the Just
Transition Mechanism was a major focus. The negotiations ahead of COP 31 in Antalya, Turkey
addressed the Just Transition Working Programme, Article 6 of the Paris Agreement on carbon
markets, Adaptation Fund.
Key objectives of COTU(K)’s participation in SB64 Climate meetings were:
To represent the interest of Kenyan workers in the climate change and just transition global
space
To network and strengthen partnerships and collaborations with the global trade union
organizations
To monitor developments in climate finance, mitigation and adaptation and Article 6 of the
Paris Agreement negotiations
To gather knowledge to support the implementation of COTU(K)’s Climate Change Policy
and enhance capacity building activities for the affiliate unions
To engage with Parties and stakeholders on climate action and just transition
