It is with great sadness that the Central Organisation of Trade Unions, COTU (K) announces the passing on of a veteran politician and former Trade Union leader both in Kenya and on the entire African Continent Brother Dennis Akumu.
The late Brother Akumu passed on this morning shortly after 2:00 a.m at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi where he was undergoing treatment following a long illness that he has been experiencing.
Brother Akumu was COTU (K)’s former Secretary General from 1969 through 1975 and a founder Secretary General of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity, OATUU based in Accra, Ghana of which I am it is current President.
At the same time the late Brother Akumu was formerly a long serving Member of Parliament for Nyakach Constituency and a founder member of the Kenya People’s Union Party which was led by the late Brother Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
He was a well versed, polished and trained negotiator whose service as a Trade Union leader to the Kenyan workers and Africa as whole will forever remain in the annuals of our history as a leader who served with zeal and commitment devoid of any compromise nor sway.
His funeral and burial arrangements will be announced later by his family and COTU (K). On behalf of the entire COTU (K) Executive Board, our Affiliates, General membership and workers in Africa, we send our deepest condolences to his wife Grace and son JD Akumu Junior.
