Dr. Francis Speech during the 43rd Session of OATUU.
The Secretary General of the Central Organization of Trade Unions, Kenya & President of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU), Dr. Francis Atwoli has stated that social protection mechanisms aimed at supporting the African economy ought to be in line with African Union (AU) and United Nations (UN) objectives. Addressing the 43rd Session of the OATUU General Council in Cairo, Egypt, Dr. Atwoli highlighted the fact that on a global level Africa is the weakest in the area of social protection.
According to him, Africa will not experience lasting development if effective social protection policies are not implemented. However, implementing effective policies that address the needs of the people requires a collaborative effort. He, therefore, called on African countries to strengthen their national trade union centers and build their capacity to support governments. He also advised trade union centers to develop a technical team to tackle social protection issues.
